Metro54 is pleased to announce The Fantastic Voyage (The Music Is The Message) - A Sonic Lecture w/ Jay Ramier.
In this sonic lecture, Jay will dive into the rich history of Afro-diasporic music and discover how, throughout different periods and innovations, these expressive forms have not only helped oppressed communities cope but also served as a means to heal, rest, and maintain resilience during times of struggle. Jay Ramier invites you to explore the therapeutic approach that Afro-diasporic people have embraced through the interpolation of music and dance.

Jay Ramier:
“Like any form of expression, music can reflect and convey various aspects of struggles. Original compositions, originating from diverse cultures, have been employed internationally to motivate and uplift people fighting for freedom, justice, or equality. But what can you do when these oppressive forces are subdued in their violent expression? How do you alleviate the pressure and the physical and psychological damage suffered during the heist of oppression? From time immemorial, Africans have discovered how to 'massage' their beings through the interpolation of music and dance. The relatively new term 'dance-music' was created to wrongfully categorize this black therapy into devilish or savage expression, in opposition to 'classical' or European excellence.

The captives in the Americas embraced this therapeutic approach. A brief analysis of Afro Music history reveals how, through different periods and innovations, these woven expressions not only helped these communities of the oppressed to cope but also served as a means to heal, rest, and maintain resilience during times of struggle, ensuring they stay fresh for a continuing war.
