FREDA (2021)
Freda grapples with the difficult decision of whether to stay or leave—a question that many people from global majority countries facing hardship must confront. She lives with her family in a struggling neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where they survive through the modest income from their small street shop. As living conditions worsen and violence escalates, Freda finds herself torn between abandoning her loved ones and holding on to hope for her country’s future. In her fiction debut, documentary filmmaker Gessica Généus offers an intimate portrayal of Haitian life, centring the female perspective within the complexities of community and nation.
