Black Mediocrity:
Conversations & Performances
No shade. All love.
Amidst all the ongoing genocides, death and racial capitalist propaganda. We would love to close our beloved #blackmediocrity season in style with a special mundane performance night and conversation. We invite each one of you who has a love affair with a hobby such as singing, dancing, playing the piano, reading poetry to join us for an evening full of surprises, joy and anecdotes.
Four years after the racial awakening, almost a week after a Black Excellent Icon accepted an anti-racist award from a Racist and Islamophobic regime in the West, we want to remind ourselves that Black excellence is a curse. To unpack that loaded statement a bit, what we mean to say is that Black excellence, as both an ideal and as a state of being, is a burden and promises soft life living for the select few that live up to the superhuman category white supremacy produced for Black people in the West.
After all, our Black Mediocrity buttons are our way of acknowledging that being free doesn’t require being stuck in a state of perpetual productivity and accolades. This gathering is a small gesture to trouble the binaries, it’s not one or the other but an invitation to relate to each other outside of capital and property.
This evening is about affirming our regular Black selves as well as the poetics of mundane, regular and joyousness of hanging out and being in conversation. We gather to remind each other that Black excellence is a curse if we dream of liberatory practices. A whole month around Black achievements undermines the everyday, extraordinary lives many of us live in this country.
