Bitter Tongues
Session #3: Traverse

Join us for Bitter Tongues Session #3: Traverse on September 11th for an evening of Performative readings exploring what it means to thwart a plan, to divert, trade or transact, move across a boundary, transgress, to trace and transcribe – to stutter and trip, to trigger a rock slide, to transform, evade, and tunnel your way to such tenacity, your tongue doesn't flinch.

Come to our salty evening in solidarity and suspicion, where we celebrate and seduce, enact and deduce. How do we choose or prove, pass or devise? For this Session, we invited three incredible accomplices, as we Takeover Metro54 for the evening.

Billy Morgan (UK, Cyprus) is an artist living and working in Amsterdam. Their interdisciplinary practice foregrounds the fictionality of the body and its splitness. Language, in the move from the internal to the external, is at its heart.

Ada Maricia Patterson is an artist and writer based between Barbados, London and Amsterdam. She works with textiles, drawing, painting, poetry, performance and video, feeling out the connections between storytelling, transformation, crisis, grief, rage, disappearance, discretion, self-defence and survival.

Yin Yin Wong is a multidisciplinary artist working across a range of media including performance, film, sculpture, drawing and site-specific installation. Through an auto-ethnographic lens they explore and question the dominant frameworks that govern the various marginalised identities and cultures they embody. Previously as a graphic designer and art director they worked around the notion of democratising access to visual culture through the publishing of artist books and the curation of exhibitions and public programmes.

With Bitter tongues, our intention is to amplify voices of resistance. We hope to provoke a fruitful resonance of drama and discourse; to question the role of politics and language(s) in our society — but also in our imaginations. We have so often seen the way a voice can be folded, forcefully funnelled and fractured to fit a false form. We would like to provide a space for individuals and collectives to gain ownership of their own culture(s) and artistic voice. With Session #3 , we intend to further platform Trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming artists. To move across a boundary, to transgress, to transform, to transcribe, to traverse.

Given the urgencies within our institutional bodies, a deterioration of Trans rights, and a growing manipulation of queer capital –– we would like the opportunity to facilitate a vocal space – not just the sonic, but the deep recoil of a tongue’s tenacity. We feel there is a need for this bitter space within every body.

How can we use the vocal tools of language to expose the structures around us? How do we encroach upon the monotonous rhythms of white institutions? Do we scream and growl? Do we stutter and stare? Do we remember in stillness? Or are our minds forever trapped from the chaos-monde?

Bring your bitterness to this evening, starting from 7pm, we’ll provide some drinks and bittersweet snacks. This session is in collaboration with Metro54.
