A Muddy Hole invites!…is the 2nd iteration of the radio hunting workshop (An empty hole invites, 2024). Led by Qiaochu and Qihang, we invite you to join us in Westerpark in Amsterdam to search for sounds, wind, noise, signals, vibrations, and frequencies, with the equipment we prepared. The park becomes a convergence of different sonic fields in the city ——As we pass through it, what do we hear? What sounds was veiled by the surroundings and infrustructures? What histories and stories do our surroundings tell?How can sound possess the power to influence our memory and body?

The workshop is based on the research on the historical aspect of radio as “the tool of empire”*, that radio was used to strengthen colonization(for example the propaganda radio PHOHI broadcasted between the Netherlands and its colonies from 1920s-1930s), Qiao and Qihang are interested in the soundscape working on our consciousness. 

Activated by the ionosphere, signals linger in the swamps, ponds, bushes, branches, and leaves. Clinging to the park, they become ghosts of different times and places, moving between the present and the past. Together, we will connect our ears to the environment and our bodies to the materials around us.
